So yeah, boy rage was a coward until naruto threw his pride in his face.

While its true that people can easily say Pain is making it worse by destroying the Leaf and perpetuating things, he kind of had a point when he said "What I did to the Leaf is what you're trying to do to me.". Before their fight Naruto might have reacted the way he did and well he actually kind of did when Hinata was almost killed.
